Advanced Dementia Care

As dementia progresses, some people may require a greater level of support and a care environment that is specifically designed around their changing needs. For people living with advanced dementia, the right environment can make a significant difference to their wellbeing.
What is Complex Care?
Complex care is care given to individuals with significant, continuing healthcare issues. Complex care involves skilled nursing supervision and coordination from medical experts. Complex care aims to give the best possible daily life for those who require in a safe and equipped environment.
Our Advanced Dementia & Complex Care
At Knights Care we are proud to offer those who challenge mainstream services a safe place to call home. Our purpose-built specialist homes are designed around the needs of individuals living with a range of conditions, including acquired brain injuries, dementia, behaviours that may challenge, and other complex support needs.
Each environment has been thoughtfully designed to provide a high standard of comfort, safety, and support, creating spaces where residents can feel secure while receiving care that is tailored around them.
Experienced Teams, Specialist Support
When supporting people living with advanced dementia, the knowledge, experience, and approach of our teams make a significant difference to everyday life.
Our staff understand that advanced dementia can affect each person differently, and that care needs to go beyond completing tasks. Building trust and meaningful relationships is essential in helping residents feel safe and supported.
Through specialist training and ongoing development, our teams receive specialist training and ongoing development to ensure they have the skills and knowledge needed to support residents effectively. We work alongside Studio3, a specialist advisory and training organisation that promotes positive approaches, non-restraint, and least restrictive practices.
Consistency is also incredibly important for people living with advanced dementia. Having a team who know a resident’s routines, preferences, personality, and life story helps create a reassuring environment where residents can feel comfortable.
Recognising the Person Behind the Dementia
For people living with advanced dementia, meaningful engagement is unique to each individual. We understand that a standard approach does not always create the most positive experience, so our teams take the time to discover what brings enjoyment to each resident.
Rather than expecting every resident to take part in group activities, we recognise the importance of personalised interaction and one-to-one time with our Activities Teams. These moments allow our teams to build relationships, understand what matters to each resident, and create opportunities for meaningful connection.
Our approach includes using reminiscence techniques, exploring residents’ life stories, and incorporating familiar items and memories from their past. Personalised activity boxes can be created around an individual’s interests, hobbies, and experiences — from photographs and keepsakes to items that spark recognition and conversation.
By understanding each resident’s interests and previous roles in life, we can often find meaningful ways to respond. A person living with dementia may not always be able to express what they need or enjoy, but their past experiences can provide valuable insight into how we support them. For example, a resident who spent many years enjoying socialising in a local pub or community setting may benefit from opportunities that recreate familiar experiences, encourage conversation, and support connection with others.
This understanding helps us create personalised environments and activities, such as reminiscence spaces, social clubs, using familiar objects, or building routines that provide purpose. By bringing elements of a resident’s past into their everyday life, we can support a stronger sense of identity and wellbeing.
