At Knights Care, we believe that even the simplest wishes can mean the world. Recently, the incredible staff of Branthwaite Care Home came together to make one very special wish a reality — and reminded us all what person-centred care is truly about.

One of Branthwaite’s residents, Jean, who is cared for in a specialised bed, shared a heartfelt wish: she longed to go outside again and feel the fresh air on her face. For someone who had always loved the outdoors, this simple pleasure had become something she missed and would ask regularly for. At first, staff were unsure whether it would be possible. Moving a bed-bound resident safely outdoors presented challenges, and there were understandable concerns about comfort, equipment, and risk. But one dedicated team member, Beckie of the Activities Team, took the time to sit with Jean and listen. During their chat, Jean expressed her fear that she might never get to go outside again — and that moment inspired Beckie to find a way to make it happen.

With careful planning, teamwork, and a creative approach, Beckie and the care staff came together and made her wish a reality. The team safely moved Jean — bed and all — out into the garden and her smile said it all.

Jeans daughter Jane has shared her heartfelt thank you to the staff for making her Mums wish a reality, and has shared the below message:

“Mum is always asking to go outside, but unfortunately is bed bound now. The staff opened her patio doors onto the court yard and pushed her bed outside – it was an amazing moment, making her smile. Mum said it’s lovely to feel the fresh air on her face and that it was “the best day of her life”. It was a lovely moment, I’m so grateful to the staff that made this possible for my Mum”
